Description

The Beulah canyon is one of the most breath taking views, outside of the Pueblo area. The unobtrusive nature of the canyon can be construed as part of a bible quote “…and on the seventh day he rested.” The serenity is awe inspiring to any artist to wanting to capture the beauty on canvas or paper, and rightfully so. It is a well hidden secret of the Colorado Rockies foothills.

Description

While walking around the back roads of Pueblo, I came across an area close to the train tracks which seems to be under some kind of construction. Among the piles of sand is a white leather couch without cushions but seeming to call attention to the fact that at one time someone had a home for it.
Alone in the midst of sand,
So sad and proud,
Calling out to all,
At one time I was among you,
Now discarded, I stand alone,
Take me home fix me up,
I am what society has become.
It is important to understand that like a couch we as society abandon the homeless, the poor, the sick and the old.

Description

The Whitewater Park located in beautiful Pueblo Colorado is one of the best places to cool off when the weather is hot. The Whitewater Park has eight awesome drops, which all together are approximately a half-mile long. The Park welcomes all kayakers, boogie boarders, surfers, tubers, and rafters. It is perfect for beginner to advanced boaters. The river has great spots to learn as well as more difficult areas to challenge the more experienced park goers. The Pueblo Whitewater Park is also a magical place to be even in the winter season. Beyond the clean cool river is a paved bike trail that runs along the river’s edge. It is a safe and refreshing place to bike, jog or go for an evening stroll. The east bank of the Whitewater Park is covered in colorful and interesting murals that are truly one of a kind and are a proud landmark of the city of Pueblo. This bank is home of the world’s largest mural! You can also catch a wide view of the silky blue Rocky Mountains. The Whitewater Park is beautifully dynamic in many ways and is one of the ultimate places to spend your days in Pueblo Colorado.

Description

I have been a volunteer lighthouse keeper at this Lake Michigan site as a member of the association which is restoring, preserving and maintaining this lighthouse and two others on the coast. The tower and lighthouse were built in 1873-74. Both interior and exterior are in process of being closely restored to original appearance and condition. It still has its 3rd order Fresnel lens and a number of other original mechanical features as well as architectural drawings on display for visitors. Visitors can climb the 130 stairs and enjoy a stellar view over the Lake and shoreline walkway that encircles the Watch Room. Volunteer keepers provide historical information and can answer questsions.

A home that connects to history of place: echoes of Native American presence on the lakeshore; to the north and south, two dormant volcanos, to the east the Cascades, to the west the rainforest and Olympics; a spawning stream for salmon running underneath the garden; diversity of vegetation in garden and surroundings showing the migration of plants and trees in a neighborhood that also speaks of migrations, diverse culturally, ethnically, economically rooting themselves or being rooted in a shared space, I being a nomad who settled here. It’s the settling that’s important and the growing love for a place that comes from being settled in it. The settler will struggle to conserve.

A house, first a fishing cabin, whose history is told in the changes its owners over almost a 100 years have made to it, built with old growth Douglas fir floated on barges on the lake in front of the house, the signatures of the Scandinavian carpenters on the framework.

Description

A beautiful view and heart dropping drive, that calms the senses. Important to me for several reasons. You commute though a little hustle and bustle town to get to the beginning of this drive where it slowly brings up above the noise and busyness of everyday life. It’s quiet (for the most part) and allows you time to step back and take in life. There are a few pull offs that allow you to get out of your car and relax, meditate, photograph, do whatever your heart desires. It gives you a sense of nostalgia, to think that once upon a time the town that lies below you wasn’t even in existence. My preference is to take the drive, windows down, music off, and just allow the breeze to calm me and the scenery to take my breath away. Driving not for you? Many people use the road as a bike path or hike to exercise and release stress. Be warned, if you are afraid of heights it may not be the place for you.

38° 14′ 15.75”, -104° 44′ 45.07”

Description

This trail is named for the informal “sculpture garden” that occupies a wide spot in the otherwise steep, narrow wash that the trail follows. I find this site very interesting due to the fact that it is constantly changing due to both natural and human forces. Mountain bikers and hikers that frequent the trail add to the display regularly and heavy rains send large amounts of water down the wash at high speeds, rearranging and knocking down stacks of rocks. It provides a great point of interest to stop and enjoy, and a nice surprise for those that are new to the area.

Description

The Nature Center on the edge of Pueblo is an excellent place to experience the natural, local environment and get a break from the city. It is surprisingly underused to the point you’d think most of the city has forgotten it exists. There are frequently only a handful of people in the area, though in practice that just makes it all the more peaceful and pleasant for the few who do take advantage of its offerings.
